Roy Gernhardt

Director of Music Ministries

Roy was classically trained as a flautist, but plays many musical instruments in his ministry of music. With 15 years of previous experience in music ministry or as pastor of worship with  the Vineyard Association of Churches, Roy believes that music “lifts up our hearts” and is the “expression of praise to the Glory of God.” His philosophy is that “the theology the church remembers is the theology that the church sings.”

Rev. Jennie Valentine

Minister of Faith Formation and Service

Rev. Jennie has always loved working children, mostly because she is a child-at-heart! She earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Framingham State College in 1991 and a Master's of Divinity degree from Andover Newton Theological School in 2011.  She went to seminary with the intent to serve children and youth as ordained clergy.  Life’s twists and turns carried Jennie through several pastorates in New Hampshire and Massachusetts churches.  God has returned her full-circle to serve children and youth as ordained clergy at First Church, the church that affirmed and supported her Calling and has always held her heart.

Jennie’s personal ministry is summarized as “speaking for justice, peace, and the environment.” She is passionate about peace and love, and how we live them out everywhere.  Her ministry is that of education and advocacy for all three.  She has experience in coordinating church school, youth projects and trips, intergenerational service trips, and faith formation programs for all ages.   Her social justice work aims to help bring a just world for all.

Rev. Jennie spends her free time walking/hiking, caring for her 7 chickens, knitting (which she learned in First Church's Shawl Ministry!), and floating in “her” pond.  She lives in Forestdale with her husband of 30 years, Paul, and the cutest dog in the world, Pikku.  They have two adult children, Chelsey (married to Devin) and Sam, and an 11 month old granddaughter, Daisy.

Kathy Gernhardt

In October 2016, Kathy Jo Gernhardt became the Organist/Pianist for First Church Sandwich.  With over six years as the Worship Director at Beechwood Congregation Church in Cohasset and as the interim Music Leader at Harbor United Methodist in Scituate, Kathy is thankful to have the opportunity to once again attend church and be involved in music ministry with her husband, Roy Gernhardt.  Kathy is always eager to worship God and simply loves to bring people into the presence of God, which she has done as a worship leader for almost twenty years.  Her passion is to serve and to draw people closer to God, encouraging them to become more whole individuals in community with each other. Roy and Kathy have two children, Isaiah (A sophomore at Rhode Island School of Design) and Hannah (A high school junior).  She enjoys spending time with family, friends, pets, listening to books, music and podcasts, surfing the web, doing art once in a blue moon, going to libraries and imagining she is the type of person who will one day exercise or do yard work.  In the real world, she works full-time for the IT Department at Diesel Direct in Stoughton, MA and is thankful for God’s provisions and faithfulness to her.  At First Church, she is looking forward to getting back into classical music, working with her hubby, playing in a band, growing in her musical skills, mastering the church’s 1850’s organ and becoming part of the First Church Sandwich community.
